PURDUE UNIVERSITY'S CENTERS / INSTITUTES

Currently, there are 116 University approved centers and institutes at Purdue. Each center is developed to fill a particular need.

Discovery Park centers extend campus infrastructure to the entire University allowing multidisciplinary groups to come together on campus and respond to grand challenges and opportunities.
Large project centers or institutes, generally funded by an outside agency, are organized around a specific objective and have a natural lifespan.
Grassroots centers or institutes vary in size and are formed from faculty initiatives; they are frequently funded by the departments.

Centers and institutes are valued and encouraged at Purdue. They create a venue for faculty to come together to solve a common goal. Additional opportunities for joint projects and funding are created as investigators interact.

A.H. Ismail Center for Health, Exercise, and Nutrition ISMAIL Lane Yahiro lyahiro@purdue.edu	An interdisciplinary Center that sponsors and facilitates health, exercise, and nutritiion research in faculty; technical and leadership skill acquisitin in students; and optimal attainable degree of individual well-being. It features models and programs designed to identify and adopt healthy lifestyle interventions applicable to population and individual health risk management issues.
Agricultural Genomics Center (aka Purdue Genomics Core Facility) PAGC Rebecca Doerge doerge@purdue.edu	The Purdue Genomics Core Facility provides low-throughput, high-throughput and next generation DNA sequencing, Affymetrix GeneChip, colony picking, library duplication, rearraying and filter printing services on a recharge basis.
Air Transport Institute for Environmental Sustainability AirTIES Denver Lopp and David Stanley denver@purdue.edu	The mission is to help researchers quickly develop and assist industry in quickly bringing to market effective, alternative aviation/aerospace fuels and components.
Bindley Bioscience Center BBC Richard Kuhn kuhnr@purdue.edu	Bindley Bioscience Center in Discovery Park blends life sciences and engineering research to cultivate and support innovative, multi-investigator, interdisciplinary research teams at Purdue University, and whose research and development efforts, in parallel, foster external engagement activities that promote economic development initiatives in the life sciences.

Center for Authentic Science Practice in Education CASPiE Dr. Gabriela C. Weaver gweaver@purdue.edu	The Center for Authentic Science Practice in Education (CASPiE) is a multi-institutional collaborative effort designed to address major barriers to providing research experiences to younger undergraduate science students.
Center for Catalyst Design CCD Nick Delgass delgass@ecn.purdue.edu	The Center for Catalyst Design (CCD) at Purdue University is focused on the development of new catalysts for a variety of chemical processes. The CCD is a cross-disciplinary team of researchers with broad expertise in catalysis, surface science, inorganic chemistry, materials science, molecular and process modeling, process systems engineering, and modern informatics methods. The CCD houses facilities for catalyst preparation, characterization, and an infrastructure for data archiving, information management, large scale computing, data visualization.

Center for Education & Research in Information Assurance and Security CERIAS Eugene H. Center for Electronic Defense Systems CEDS Dimitrios Peroulis dperouli@purdue.edu	The center focuses on applied electromagnetics. This focus has taken the group's research in 3 distinct directions: advanced packaging, inegrated sensors, adn wireless sensors and radar. The centers objective is to develop a comprehensive approach to RF engineering that will span from electo-magnetics to circuits to wave form synthesis to digital processing.
Center for Environmental and Regulatory Information Systems CERIS Eileen Luke lukee@purdue.edu	CERIS operates and maintains four projects – NPIRS, NAPIS, NPDN, and EXCERPT. These projects are collection of databases, aplications, and web sites on pesticide registrations, pest surveys, plant diagnostics, and export regulations and serve as useful tools in aiding agricultural extension services, agricultural regulatory activities, plant bio-security, and agricultural exports.
Center for Excellence in Consumer Leadership ExCel Dr. Sugato Chakravarty sugato@purdue.edu	The center provides management development and leadership experiences to motivated sales professionals and post baccalaureate students. The center will provide appropriate research support to qualified faculty proposing research related to executive performance with behavioral adn attitudinal factors as well as designing technologically innovative online learning segments.
Center for Families at Purdue University CFF Shelley M. MacDermid shelley@purdue.edu	The Center for Families at Purdue University focuses on improving the quality of life for families and strengthening the capacity of families to provide nurturing environments for their members. To accomplish this, the center works with four important groups whose efforts directly impact quality of life for families: extension educators, human service providers, employers, and policymakers.
Center for Food Animal Well-Being CAWB Dr. Ed Pajor pajor@purdue.edu	The mission of the center is to advance the understanding of interactions between food animal productivity and well-being to enable a scientific and public policy climate which promotes animal well-being and supports economically viable food animal production systems.
Center for Food Safety Engineering CFSE Lisa J. Mauer mauer@purdue.edu	The Center for Food Safety Engineering is a 5 School multidisciplinary effort that focuses on developing detection technology and control measures for foodborne pathogens.

Center for Global Trade Analysis GTAP Terrie L. Walmsley twalmsle@purdue.edu	The Center for Global Trade Analysis is the publicly funded, university-based home for GTAP (Global Trade Analysis Project), a global network of researchers and policy makers conducting quantitative analysis of international policy issues. Our purpose is to improve the quality of global economy-wide analysis through education and by developing analytical data bases, economic models, and innovative methodologies.
Center for Impact Science and Engineering CISE James Caruthers james.m.caruthers.1@purdue.edu	The CISE will develop and apply new tools for the analysis of the response of materials and systems of interest to the DoD, including biological materials, to impact and blast events.
Center for Integrated Food Manufacturing ciFM Mark Morgan mmorgan@purdue.edu	The Center for Integrated Food Manufacturing (ciFM) is an interdisciplinary team that conducts fundamental and applied research leading to improved food manufacturing through process engineering and advanced technology. In addition, the center provides educational workshops on processing and technology tailored to the food industry. New in 2008, the ciFM laboratory is now ISO 17025 certified and EHEDG authorized as a hygienic equipment design test institute.

Center for Literacy Education and Research CLEAR Maribeth Cassidy Schmitt mschmitt@purdue.edu	The fundamental mission of the center is to provide high quality professional development for teachers and administrators that will ultimately ensure all P-12 students are able to read and write independently, providing them with a strong foundation for academic preparation and lifelong learning. Center for Materials Under Extreme Environments CMUXE Ahmed Hassanein hassanein@purdue.edu	The Center for Materials Under Extreme Environments (CMUXE)is created to study the interactions of high-intensity, modulated energy beams: electromagnetic radiation, plasma, electrons, ions and oher particle sources i.e. HEIGHTS simulation package and state of the art experimental devices that include intense particle and laser beams with different characteristics.
Center for New Crops and Plant Products NewCROP Jules Janick janick@purdue.edu	The center maintains a database on world crops and breeding programs on apple and arrugula. The database includes information on projects such as, Hoosier Botanicals, PRI Apple Disease Resistant Breeding program, History of Horticulture and plant images.
Center for Nursing History, Ethics, and Human Rights CNHEHR Clara Richardson richarcj@purdue.edu	The Center for Nursing History, Ethics, and Human Rights promotes leadership and advocacy by Purdue University nursing students and interdisciplinary students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community through learning, discovery, and engagement in historical, ethical, and human rights issues influencing health care in the twenty-first century.
Center for Paralysis Research CPR Richard Borgens borgens@purdue.edu	The Center for Paralysis Research was founded to both develop and test promising methods of treatment for spinal cord injuries, stroke and head trauma. The center is dedicated to research new treatments and to intervene in acute injuries.

Center for Professional Studies in Technology and Applied Research PROSTAR Gary R. Bertoline bertoline@purdue.edu	The mission of this center in fulfilling the College of Technology’s role as a statewide institution and entity of a land grant university is to provide education and engage in applied research for business and industry. This center will provide degrees, certificates, courses, and workshops to professionals in industry at the local, state, regional, and national levels and coordinate industry-based applied research in the College of Technology. The courses would be delivered on campus, by distance, on site, or a combination. An administrative structure will be created to manage all professional education and facilitate applied research efforts in the College.

Center for Research on Diversity and Inclusion CRDI Dr. S. Laurel Weldon weldons@purdue.edu	The Center for Research on Diversity and Inclusion aims to support and highlight the excellent scholarly work on diversity and inclusion happening in the College of Liberal Arts and across the University. CRDI also fosters and facilitates more such innovative research, pushing into new areas looking at old questions in new ways.
Center for Road Safety CRS Andrew P. Tarko tarko@purdue.edu	CRS conducts research studies of motor vehicle safety including problem identification, intervention analysis, program outcome assessment, and evaluation of emerging technologies for data collection and management. CRS has been awarded grants from the Federal Highway Administration, the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, the Indiana Department of Transportation, and other public and private organizations.

Herrick Laboratories HL Patricia Davies daviesp@ecn.purdue.edu	The Laboratories, established in 1958, is an institution dedicated to graduate education and engineering research with emphasis on technology transfer to industry. The three main research areas are: Thermal Systems, Noise and Vibration Control, and Electromechanical Systems.
Indiana Center for Database Systems ICDS Christopher W. Clifton clifton@cs.purdue.edu	ICDS takes an interdisciplinary approach to solving practical problems in a wide variety of database systems and their applications. Several large-scale, multi-year efforts bring research from ICDS and elsewhere to bear on real-world problems giving students training in database development techniques in a much greater depth than is possible in the classroom.

Ingestive Behavior Research Center IBRC Rick Mattes mattes@purdue.edu	The Ingestive Behavior Research Center (IBRC) promotes the integrative, cross-disciplinary study of ingestion, emphasizing thorough analyses of feeding behavior in human and laboratory animal models. These analyses rely on rigorous assessments of the genetic, physiological, nutritional, neural, developmental and environmental determinants of feeding and feeding-related disorders.
Institute for P-12 Engineering Research and Learning INSPIRE Johannes Strobel jstrobel@purdue.edu	INSPIRE is a synergistic P-12 Engineering research and learning institute established to help educators investigate how students learn and to instill a desire in students to study engineering from elementary through high school. The goal is to increase the numbers and diversity of students majoring in engineering disciplines at the university level.
Institute for Science of Information ISI Wojciech Szpankowski szpan@purdue.edu	Information is the basic commodity of our era. We propose a new interdisciplinary Purdue Institute for the Science of Information to advance a comprehensive science of information, offering a wealth of societal benefits in diverse engineering, scientific, and social applications. We integrate research and teaching activities that investigate information from all angles: from the fundamental theoretical underpinnings of information to the science and engineering of novel substrates, biological networks, chemistry, communication networks, economics, physics, and complex social systems.

Joint Networked Centre on Nanomaterials for Energy JNCNE Monica Allain mallain@purdue.edu	The Indo-US Joint Networked Centre focuses on the discovery and development of nanomaterials with application to energy technologies. The overarching objective is to provide new synergy between efforts in India and the US whereby partners with complementary expertise and interests will be addressing global energy challenges particularly to renewable and sustainable approaches.

Markey Center for Structural Biology MCSB Cynthia Stauffacher cstauffa@purdue.edu	The structure group at Purdue is currently recognized as an outstanding international center for the study of viruses, enzymes and signaling proteins, membrane proteins, and nucleic acids by x-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and computational biology.
Mitsubishi Center for Thermal-Hydraulics MCTH Dr. Mamoru Ishii ishii@purdue.edu	The Mitsubishi Center for Thermal-Hydraulics aims to provide the technical support to the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI)in aquiring necessary data, developing new or improved physical models, and performing numerical simulations for various thermal-hydraulic phenomena of importance to MHI.
National Nuclear Security Administration Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems NNSA PRISM Jayathi Murthy jmurthy@purdue.edu	NNSA PRISM’s mission is to accelerate substantially the development of MEMS technologies for civilian and defense applications as well as to significantly improve the understanding of long-term reliability of MEMS and survivability in harsh environments.
National Veterinary Cytology Resource Center NVCRC Alan H. Rebar rebar@purdue.edu	The long-term goals of the center is to serve as a center for educational material, a resource for consultation and a focus of research in the area of Veterinary Diagnostic Cytology and Hematology.
